Top 13 reasons to CONSIDER the Microsoft platform for Web 2.0 development

When heading out to the Mix 06 conference, one of the things I wanted to get my head around was is Microsoft a viable Web 2.0 application development platform. I talked to a lot of people and learned a bunch of things about Microsoft and their place in the web application world. Subsequently Microsoft invited me out to Seattle for their Microsoft Technology Summit(MTS).

I’m building Zigtag on the LAMP stack using PHP/MySQL and was open to seeing what the Microsoft platform had to offer. While the Microsoft koolaid (er Redbull™) may of not yet worn off, I wanted to outline some of the things I discovered that your average LAMP developer (like myself) may not know.

This list isn’t meant to suggest that an application built on a LAMP stack doesn’t share some of these same attributes, but to more highlight that Microsoft may be more of an option than I once thought.

13 reasons to consider the Microsoft platform for Web 2.0 development

1. Free Developer Tools.

Microsoft offers their Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition as a free download. This is a subset of the full Visual Studio focused solely on building web applications.

2. Free Database.

In addition to free developer tools, Microsoft also offers a free database in their Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. This is a subset of their commercial SQL Server 2005 database and can be deployed commercially with the following limitations:

SQL Server Express is designed to meet the needs of simple applications. It is limited to using 1 CPU and up to 1GB RAM, with a 4GB maximum database size. SQL Server Express does not include any of the advanced components of SQL Server including Analysis Services, Reporting Services, Data Transformation Services, and Notification Services.
This provides an interesting alternative to mySQL for a web application developer to get started. Clearly as your business grows, you’ll be moving up to the full commercial version with it’s associated costs.

3. Microsoft Atlas makes AJAX easier.

Microsoft Atlas is Microsoft’s AJAX library for making developing web applications easier.
This point I intend to explore a little more but from the demos at Mix06 and some discussion with developers, it looks like removes a TON of the work required to AJAX enabling a Web 2.0 application.

Of interest during one of the demo’s they showed the Microsoft Atlas platform working with a Apache/PHP backend without any changes to the code. Cool!

At the MTS event, Scott Guthrie announced the Atlas Control Toolkit which is a library of AJAX controls. The VERY interesting thing was that Microsoft is offering them with an open license. And is encouraging other developers to contribute. It’s released under the Microsoft Permissive License which looks good too.

From ScottGu:

We are going to use a collaborative, open-source, model to develop it. Specifically, we are going to setup a source control repository on the Internet and allow both Microsoft and non-Microsoft developers to work on the project together. This means you’ll be able to contribute controls of your own to the toolkit, make improvements to existing ones, and fix bugs. We’ll then publish regular binary drops (with source of course) that any ASP.NET developer will be able to download and use within their sites (if popular your control might even be used billions of times a day).

I’m not sure we need YAAF (Yet Another AJAX Framework) and I wonder why Microsoft didn’t just put their muscle behind an already open source controls framework like Dojo.

Note to Microsoft: Don’t make your downloadbles .exe’s If I’m looking to checkout ATLAS from my Macintosh the .exe makes it a pain.

4. Microsoft doesn’t HAVE to get ALL of your business.

Traditionally, with Microsoft if you liked the value proposition of one piece of the development stack from Microsoft, you have to get everything from Microsoft. When building Web 2.0 apps using the Microsoft platform it can be a mix and match opportunity.

Start with ATLAS which is free and the contorls are open source if you want to use it with PHP, Apache and MySQL no problem. Mix and match in any of ASP, IIS, MSSQL in place of PHP, Apache, MySQL if/when it makes sense.

There are advantages to using the whole stack but they aren’t forcing it any more. Use one or none in combo with Atlas. Their message is there are integration advantages to using the whole stack but because you don’t like or can’t justify the cost of one element in the stack doesn’t mean you have to take Microsoft completely out of the equation.

5. Microsoft solutions can scale.

One of the brilliant moves by Microsoft at Mix 06 was brining the CTO of MySpace on stage for the keynote and talking about how their service has grown and scaled based on the Microsoft platform. With over 260,000 new user registrations per day, more than 60 million users and 1.5 Billion page views per day, MySpace recently passed MSN to become the #2 visited site on the Internet!

As developers of Web 2.0 applications, we can dream of having the scaling problems that MySpace has.

I’d love to know what the Myspace licensing costs are. I’m sure it’s a big number but when they converted from Cold Fusion to Microsoft a while back I’m sure they ‘ran the numbers’ and Microsoft made sense. That’s a ton of time, support and convenience that Microsoft has to be providing over a LAMP based solution in exchange for all those dollars.

6. Microsoft pricing is flexible.

Clearly with a LAMP stack the software costs are near zero but potentially at the expense of development speed or ongoing maintenance/support. Clearly the Microsoft significant software costs (though as I’ve illustrated above, Microsoft is looking to lower the cost barriers to getting started).

One of the programs I learned about is the Microsoft Service Provider License which is pretty interesting. Basically it allows you to license your Microsoft software on a month to month basis. You can add and remove additional MSSQL or IIS servers to your server farm on a monthly basis and pay only for the licenses you use that month. If you’re seasonal or have a major event that needs to handle a bunch more traffic, you can quickly scale up or down without a major software license investment.

I’d really like to get a ballpark on what the cost of Microsoft licenses are for a range of scenarios (small startup up to a MySpace type configuration).

7. Ray Ozzie

Just like Apple bought Steve Jobs for $400MM and got NeXT for free, I think Microsoft bought Ray Ozzie and got Groove for free. While it would be hard to match the impact Steve Jobs had on Apple, I really believe that Ray Ozzie has the opportunity to make a significant impact on the future of Microsoft.

Innovations like Live Clipboard & Simple Sharing Extension are important plumbing in the Web 2.0 world and by contributing these ideas in an open manner is a sign of Microsoft being a better corporate citizen.

8. Robert Scoble

I think Robert is doing a massive service to Microsoft by exposing the blogging community to another side of Microsoft. Robert’s ability to both criticize Microsoft when they deserve it and publicly defend Microsoft when there is misinformation is great. He’s providing a human face to the company. His blog posts and the few discussions I’ve had with him have all been quite balanced. I think having Robert on board makes it harder for Microsoft to be evil.

Reading Robert’s blog was the first step in me considering Microsoft to not be COMPLETELY evil.

9. Being based on the Microsoft platform doesn’t limit your acquisition options.

This is subtle, yet an important consideration for some Web 2.0 startups. The recent purchase of Writely (which was a Microsoft ASP based service), showcases that it isn’t a prohibitive barrier in the Google acquisition process.

10. Microsoft wants to be a part of the community
The great thing I found about the Mix 06 and MTS events was the diversity of those in attendance. By reaching out to people that aren’t normally attending Microsoft developer events, I think Microsoft got to hear a much broader array of opinions and the interactive nature of many of the sessions showcased they really want to listen, learn and be a part of the web community.

Microsoft is interested in microformats & RSS, opening up their search to API’s and their contributions of SEE and Live Clipboard further showcase that Microsoft wants to really be a part of the Web 2.0 community.

11. Microsoft employees aren’t evil.
My impression of the whole Mix 06 event and the subsequent Microsoft Technology Summit is Microsoft is truly interested in getting feedback and having discussions from non traditional sources. Having Tim O’Reilly on stage for the Keynote at Mix 06 asking Bill Gates questions was interesting. It was great to see the contrast between the openness of Web 2.0 with the traditional closed nature of Microsoft.

Microsoft has dozens of Developer Evangelists whose sole job is to help developers understand the value they can get out of the Microsoft platform. One thing I liked was that most (all?) of them don’t have any sales quotas. There job is to truly evangelize the platform.

The many Developer Evangelists I’ve talked to I really enjoyed their demeanor. It’s not a hard sell at all. Without them saying it, I got the feel of:

“Here’s what were up to if it makes enough sense, we’ll help you become a customer, if it doesn’t at least we’re helping dispel a few myths and learning where we still suck.”
While at Mix 06, I chatted with a bunch of Microsoft people and they all were anxious to understand and discuss my needs as a Web 2.0 application developer. They all managed to provide a fairly balanced discussion. It’s clear that the people I talked to are passionate about the advantages of the Microsoft platform.

I didn’t drink enough Kool-Aid to entirely wash away any doubts of corporate Microsoft evil status…but I can work on that.

12. Microsoft has good development resources

Learn ASP, is a website that has a series of free webcasts that showcase the differences between ASP, PHP, JSP, Cold Fusion. This allows developers familiar with a particular language to contrast and compare against ASP. I’ve only skimmed them but the webcasts are quite comprehensive and would be helpful in understanding if ASP.Net is the right solution for you.

13. Microsoft speeds web application development

Not so sure about this one yet. From the many demos I’ve seen, the tools look quite mature and well thought out. Unlike the old days of Microsoft where the HTML code generated by their tools was awful, the code I’ve seen it output has been clean and workable.

All the demos seemed to make for a pretty quick and easy development process. I haven’t had an opportunity to fully explore the all the tools to confirm their ease of use but I’m optimistic.

I’ve spoken with a number of ASP developers, many who’ve come years of PHP development and they swear by the Microsoft ASP platform as a better and quicker development platform.

I’ve had a few offers by passionate ASP developers to help me port Zigtag over to ASP.

Conclusion

Microsoft has definitely lowered the barriers to getting started with the Microsoft platform for developing Web 2.0 applications. Clearly there are many other issues to look at before adopting the Microsoft platform including, security, ease of development, vendor lock-in, performance, initial learning curves and of course the ultimate software license costs.

I plan to continue developing Zigtag in PHP and MySQL, I’ll probably dabble with some of Microsoft’s tools to get a better understanding of the advantages and to see if they provide a better development experience. I know there are a FEW people reading this that are surprised shocked I’d consider the Microsoft platform (myself included). Perhaps the koolaid will wear off?

I'm a long time Free Software advocate. I lead a completely "Microsoft free" lifestyle. I've been running Linux on my desktop since 1994. I am delighted to see it improve so much every year thanks to the contributions of so many. I'm especially thrilled seeing so many young people joining this adventure. I'm grateful for all the software, it is a real treasure. I'm literally in love with my Kubuntu desktop. There's so much in there to discover.

Many people misunderstand the FLOSS phenomenon because they erroneously frame it in economic models they're familiar with. For me, it is actually pretty simple: I contribute one line, or one idea, one bug report, or one patch, whatever, and I get my "investment" back multiplied by many millions. A ten-million fold return in ten years is greater than 400% return/year. I don't know of any financial instrument that can yield so much with such consistency, year after year. Even when you think of someone like Linus, who has contributed many thousands of highly critical code lines -- his original code is now overwhelmed by code from many others. Even when you ignore goodwill, opportunity, connections, stock options, and focus on just the number of lines of code -- Linus got his investment back many times over (not to mention doing it for fun :)

I want to thank each and every one of the contributors who are making this alternative and superior lifestyle a reality. Together you're changing the world.

Broadband, the feature that made the Web come alive after the "dotcom crash" brought it crumbling down, may soon be a reality on mobile phones. The current 3G and 3.5G networks are dismally slow, and even worse in affordability (as I discovered, much to my chagrin, after eagerly using Gmail on my Nokia N73--more on that debacle some other time).

Samsung promised, quite a while ago, to make available WiBro-enabled handsets. Word is that these promised handsets may well make it to the shelves in Korea in a month. Looking something like this:

Funky, if you ask me! WiBro, as you know, is the wireless standard that Korea came up with, a phenomenon that spans the entire city of Seoul. With the launch of WiBro devices, users can (or should be able to, anyway) enjoy fast and affordable wireless Internet services in every nook and cranny of Seoul. (PS: WiBro services are also available in the southern suburbs of Seoul, including 17 universities and four lines of the city's subway.)

Services on these devices could offer users Web searching, email, multimedia features, video conferencing, and VoIP at an affordable price. For more information and a handful of jargon on the handsets themselves, click on this news site.

What does this mean for global competitors?

Apple's iPhone is due shortly. Already, LG's Prada phone, and Helio's Ocean have been billed as the iPhone killers. Interface-wise, it is difficult to compete with Apple (though Helio is one independent MVNO that does seem to "get it"), but the Cupertino company may have bitten the wrong apple by going for Cingular's network, which is the EDGE/HSDPA side of the family.

Helio's Ocean, by contrast, will be with the EV-DO family. In real-world testing, the fastest that HSPDA has managed in terms of speed is about 1Mbps, whereas Qualcomm's EV-DO tests already clocked 3Mbps.

Now, with WiBro (or WiMax, its likely international cousin) around the corner, the discussion about HSPDA vs. EV-DO seems puerile, because not only is the speed of these wireless puppies faster by multitudes, they are also significantly more cost-effective (imagine a fixed price plan per month for Internet usage, similar to your current broadband package) and available.

Samsung Electronics to test-run WiBro for U.S. military

SEOUL, April 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it plans a test run of the nation's homegrown high-speed wireless Internet technology next month in a U.S. military camp.

Under a deal signed with the U.S. Army's Communications Electronics Research and Development Engineering Center, Samsung said it will launch the test operation of WiBro in an army research center complex in New Jersey for four months.

The move is expected to help Samsung determine whether the technology could be applied to the U.S. military's communications system, company officials said.

WiBro refers to wireless Internet developed by a group of local firms, including Samsung, which allows for the fastest data transfer speed among existing mobile technologies.

Samsung is spearheading efforts to spread the technology, which is regarded as less expensive to establish than fixed-line Internet infrastructure.

Last month, the South Korean electronics giant inked a deal with global mobile service operator Sprint Nextel Corp. under which it will provide WiBro-related equipment in five major U.S. cities.

Think how WiFi has changed our ways of interacting. Many of us take it for granted that we can run chat sessions and check our email while sitting in a conference or waiting for our train. Hotels and cafes in many areas don’t dare to open without wireless Internet.

But WiFi has 1990s bandwidth; you’ll be frustrated trying to download your daughter’s video. WiMAX can break the bandwidth barrier, but it’s a costly, centralized technology that has to be rolled out by large institutions. Fiber is even more of a long-range investment, and requires labor-intensive installation.

The promise of Ronja is mesh technology that can deliver 10 Mbps and can be built by an amateur in his or her own home for $100 per unit. The specs are all open-source. Where costs or regulations delay the stringing of cable or fiber, this technology could quickly bring neighborhoods into the twenty-first century in terms of bandwidth and universal service. Applications such as interactive video teleconferencing and remote application access with large remote data storage become immediate possibilities.

MTN seeking WiMAX partner

South Africa’s second largest cellular operator MTN is looking at forming a partnership with one of the country’s WiMAX wireless broadband licensees. MTN currently holds a limited test licence for WiMAX services and telecoms regulator Icasa has so far refused to convert this into a full concession, although MTN is hopeful that it will be granted some WiMAX spectrum; the company’s data manager, Brian Seligmann, told Business Day: ‘The door isn't closed for WiMAX licences. We are working with Icasa on what licences and frequencies it is potentially willing to give us.’

First thing is to deploy the though within dynamic visual modeling.
cause & effect is good to me.
but item should not be alone, and must include time constraint (date - due date) and locality (work , home, mobile, ..)

Lincoln is a Microsoft Research prototype which allows you to search for information about an object by just taking a photo of it. Your photo is matched against a set of images tagged with relevant web pages and comments supplied by a community of users.

It sounds so good.
Connecting Offline Objects to the web using a simple picture match 2 main trends:
1) mobile device are not good for surfing - people want to have access to info in one click.
2) PWC (Physical World connection) is a tremendous new field for new business to emerge.
It can be through picture - barcode.

There is such an acceleration in new web applications and new uses that is astonished.
We re really on a post web2.0 phase and an amazing number of startups are emerging trying to create new use with internet and mobile.
Whole connected world is emerging giving possibility to people to interact in many new ways.
New tools to ease the relationship we can have with the network & the knowledge are emerging.

1) Better Browsing experience

On this point we need to differentiate the surfing activity and the reflexive activity.
For those who surf quick, you know that you loose 60% of the initial searches because you re diverted by a interesting link.
I think that when the user is surfing we just need to let him do free style.
let him go his own speed, but give him search's history + quick on the fly annotation capacity.
Thanks google they did it.
- I have finally the history analysis of my search on google, tracking the ideas i wanted to look for , and diverted by another idea found on a page, i forgot.
- i can surf the web and make on the fly annotations i will be able to read later on in the evening.

Still a real Objectives management tool should be correlated with the surfing activity - because surfing refer to objective. How those two aspects (Objective & surfing) are still not visually connected? -

2) Better Visual experience

I can manage in a single page my todo list , agenda , press review, notebook, mail.
Still i have a problem with visualisation offered today by those tools.
i dont want to change TAB to be able to see the rest of my google gadget.
Rapidly my page is full and i would like more data in a single page.
A zooming functionality should be added in order to pass from a group of interest to another quickly.
The main priority is to have all in a single page.
When you divide visually your though into parts - you stop your capacity to see the potential correlation between them.
A global view with zoom is the only way to get both - Global view + quick access to specific item.
Adding 3D would be great of course.

3) Better Provider experience

I can see that from a single page i can scan all the network - get the information when it comes.
publish and share the most interesting on the web in a minute. I can post on the fly from mobile,
track and understand the will of my blog visitors hourly , know from which town they re reading me.
I can build community in sharing my note i wrote on a single webpage.

We can think thit will unleash capacity of the readers to turn into providers -
Let give them the right tools - sit and watch the evolutions coming from inside.

What take so long? when will an open entity will focus on the idea production process?
it s a whole unknown and un modelized field -- what make a personn get a innovative idea.
lets find a modelisation of this process in order to control the idea production.
when the modelisation is done, let s apply a method in order to optimize this process.
dont need to speak about dolphins, shark, breakpoint strategy and the old grid of Popper.

Good point : we saw today some initiatives in this field - at least they consist in collecting IDEAs and begin to work on it . i speak about Dell's ideastorm and more recently Projectredstripe.

still it s not working on the core -- the IDEA. the core element to progress & evolution -- the core element that will drive progress. Greed in the high tech environment is the main driver, so why Greed doesn t focus on the Idea? For the "for me this is intellectual challenge not greed" guys , i will remember what Gordon says - greed is good - (backed by philosoph greater than you)

So why this process is not under work & control from capitalist entity?

it could be small entities of 20 persons , capitalistic, with the only objective to detect business opportunities before the others, build startups and look for sell or IPO.
For this a method would be applied: weekly scanning of high techs news, brainstorming, 20 intelligences converging and working non stop to scan and produce ideas.

A startup's production entity that would at least focus on BEFORE THE IDEAS rather than HOW TO MAKE A BUSINESS FROM THE IDEA.

The only obvious reason for me is that when two main drivers like Greed & Innovative Ideas doesn t meet - it s because one is not satisfied.
HOW can we imagine a retribution system & Idea control system to satisfy Greed?
We need to put lawyers in the loop to make appear the good structure and good retribution system.

"entrepreneur et business plan -- ne faut il pas segmenter le marché?
1) Une chose est de scanner de facon hebdomadaire l actualité high tech, organiser des brainstorming, et detecter des opportunités business basées sur des technologies / concepts innovants.
- l' objectif etant de detecter les opportunités business plus rapidement que les autres, et de facon recurrente. (it s a race)
2) Une autre chose est de pouvoir huiler le processus de validation de l idée & de realisation /presentation des business plans.
Ce ne sont pas les memes competences necessaires pour l une et l autre chose. ce n est pas le meme networking a travailler.
Alors que font aujourd hui les entrepreneurs capables du 1) mais pas encore du 2)? -préssés par le temps?(entre nous un bon nombre) ils laissent tomber.

Il faudrait l emergence d un acteur dans la chaine qui puisse rapidement:
- valider le concept (ou non)
- structurer de facon dynamique l equipe pertinente pour transformer le dossier en business plan (approche commando)
- structurer l equipe pertinente pour faire tourner la societe etablie si un investissement a lieu
- securiser la position de l entrepreneur par une protection de l idee (NDA ou autres) & une retribution adequate (options ou autres) si un investissement est effectivement realisé (et la startup incorporée)
Existe t il un tel acteur aujourd hui en france?

Ne penses tu pas qu une telle structure permettrait
d isoler le travail de detection d opportunité du reste?
l enjeu est ici double:
-liberer la créativité des entrepreneurs, enfin etudiée en tant que telle et pratiquée avec methodologie.
-dynamiser ce marché par une affectation des compétences au sujet precis sur lequel elles excellent.

1- There is too much information today to be able to analyse and drop/archive to the right place the right piece of infomation in the righ time.

2- Letters and words / signs have been invented at a time where tools only allowed 2D representation -> this inner limitation of the current language we know will become more and more visible as we will enter more and more in a 3D enable visualisation world.

3- Breakpoint inflexion appears when inner and outside trends are diverging.

4- It take more and more time to read and understand large amount of information. In the same time it becomes more and more clear that you dont need to read all the words of a page to understand the idea/inforamtion that want to be communicated. You just need few but good words.

5- New vizualisation tools are emerging taking into account the complexity of today information (hyperbolic trees from Xerox, GUESS from Eytan Adar) - mainly to define new way to vizualize complexity. -> let s create new way to express and exchange complexity.

6- In common written language link between words are simple - one word follow the previous one. linear sequential order. a spatial link between two rich meanings could be drawn as a node link, or several, each of them could be described in several dimensions, with several attributes.

-> we need a new meta 3D alphabet based on richer signs for 4 consequent reasons

1- Enrich and complexify the unity of the language - the word will mean more because it will use more dimensions to be understood (3D; inner & outsider granularity, color) -> quick understanding of larger amount of information.

2- Allow the user to understand a simple idea quicker - and a complex idea quicker too, visually. -> better understanding of much larger amount of infomation - to feel it think about GUESS zoom in/zoom out where simple nodes are ideas/concept

3- Allow the user to express a simple idea quicker - and a complex idea quicker too, visually. -> better fluidity for the expression of much larger amount of infomation. unleash the user 'scpu.

4- Allow the user to easily manipulate /store /comment the unity idea/word into a 3D storing graph.

The past decades we focus on defining and optimizing language between machine.
the bottleneck appears now between us and the machine.
Working on display support wont be sufficient. you ll always be limited by the inner barrier of the sign.
Acting at the root of the descriptive level. - the sign itself - would be vignifiant.

La langue universelle n'a jamais été qu'un rêve impossible.
La tentative qu'Abraham Abehsera présente ici est d'une originalité absolue. Mais aussi d'une simplicité absolue.

Il ne s'agit pas de trouver une hypothétique langue des origines. Pour l'auteur, la Réalité présente un langage universel naturel à travers lequel les plantes, les roches et les animaux communiquent. Les mots sont les traces parlées de cette communication.

Un phénomène curieux, jamais souligné à ce jour, intrigua A.A.Abehsera aux débuts de sa recherche : les langues, aussi différentes fusent-elles, reproduisent les mêmes jeux de mots. En français, par exemple, le hasard a fait que mèche et méchant se ressemblent. Or ce hasard s'est reproduit en anglais où l'on dit wick et wicked.

D'innombrables répétitions de cet ordre, traduisent l'existence de champs physiques qui affectent toute la nature, et où ce qui se ressemble, s'assemble. C'est le cas pour la mèche et le méchant, qui ont, pour essence commune, le fait d'être tordus.

Ces champs saisissent les mots qui décrivent des objets qui se ressemblent et les transforment jusqu'à ce qu'ils deviennent des homonymes. On apprendra alors que la mèche, le cheval, l'enfant et la mûre, non seulement se parlent entre eux, mais aussi, qu'ils ont leur mot à dire sur les sons choisis par l'homme pour les nommer... ci dessous un autre exemple.

premiers pas…
ensuite viendront l objectif , la methode, et la retribution financiere adequate..
un peu de methode en “amont” de l idee, scanning de l actualité hebdomadaire et brainstorming hebdomadaire, avec les bonnes personnes autour de la table…devant un bon tableau vierge. On appelle ca la “convergence”.

Detecter les opportunites business et les turner into business plan + prototype avant les autres..il parait qu elles sont globales elles aussi, les opportunites alors soyons reactifs, avant les autres..

alors un peu de methode, histoire de huiler le processus, la pondeuse a startups enfin decomplexée qui saura reunir et retribuer les pêrsonnes souhaitant focaliser sur la detection d opportunites business et leur application rapide dans le monde reel.
Un rouleau compresseur a idées, un rouleau compresseur a Betas.. Vite!!

et une bon systeme de retribution collegiale — assoc? , sarl?, avis aux avocats !

un premier pas pour un peu plus de methode “en amont de l IDEE”.
